Have the gates of hell opened up in Cleveland this year? March 2026 has seen Cleveland become a hotbed of calamity and destruction. Just outside the Justice Center downtown on Sunday March 8, the intersection of West 3rd Street and St. Clair collapsed into a sinkhole. One car came dangerously close to falling in as the hole expanded and thankfully the driver was not hurt. The intersection was already covered in traffic cones as a water main break was being fixed under the street. The site is still under construction, and the entire intersection is closed because of the sinkhole. According to a statement by Cleveland Water, the cause of the sinkhole is unknown, and there is no forecast as to when construction will conclude.

On the morning of the 17th, a loud boom was felt by just about everyone in northern Ohio. Some thought it was a gunshot or even a bomb. Actually, the sound came from a meteor that broke the sound barrier and exploded over northeast Ohio. According to NASA, the meteor weighed 17,000 pounds and traveled 44,000 miles per hour. The remnants of the meteor landed in Medina County, though most of the mass burned on its decent. Several home cameras caught the fireball flying through the sky. NASA states that while the meteors are not uncommon, it is unusual for them to be spotted over residential areas.

Though Cleveland is not known for perfect weather, we generally are removed from the big natural disasters that hit other parts of the country. Our earthquakes don’t do much more than rattle the outdoor furniture and are more a cause for laughter than worry. Could the sinkhole and meteor be signs that Cleveland isn’t as safe as we thought it was?

Maybe in the future, people will be wearing T-shirts saying “I survived 2026 in Cleveland.”
