“Where are you from?” A question that can present some tension when posed with hidden intentions. But when I answer, I happily say Shaker Heights, Ohio. The question itself can reveal so much about a person. To me, being from Shaker Heights arises a nuanced sense of pride within me. I grew up in the small town and lived there until I was 15. Although since then, I’ve moved around and ultimately settled in a township within Lake County, I’m still from Shaker Heights. I couldn’t say I’m from Lake County; it just wouldn’t be true.
Shaker Heights is a town well known by those who live within Cuyahoga County and especially those living in the suburbs bordering the city of Cleveland. It’s a suburb close enough to the city yet far enough from it that it gives a homey feel that one can easily escape from the sleepy city on a whim. This key aspect of Shaker is one which I feel has shaped me.
Living in a town so close to the city offers greater accessibility to the dense concrete environment while also offering respite within the lavish greenery of Shaker. The love I have for green space and community emphasis on green infrastructure comes from my own hometown’s dedication. The town is one that is densely packed with residential homes as well as mixed use commercial areas that could leave little space for the natural environment. Rather than let this reality limit Shaker’s ability to appreciate and honor its environment, it encourages it instead. The towering trees on tree-lawns, community gardens, and parks throughout the town are just one special trait that makes me happy to say I’m from Shaker Heights.
